You’ve seen the viral chopped sandwiches all over TikTok — now meet their crowd-pleasing cousin: the Viral Italian Hoagie Dip. It’s basically your favorite sub in party form — no soggy bread, no sandwich assembly line, and absolutely no regrets.

Inspired by everyone’s favorite hoagie shop classic, this dip layers everything you love — savory deli meats, melty cheese, and that bold, zesty dressing — into one irresistible bowl of flavor. Even better, it’s the kind of dish that wins over everyone, whether you’re lounging poolside in summer or hosting a cozy fall game-day spread.

The Ingredients

Personally, I love a recipe that acts more like a blueprint than a strict rulebook. In other words, you can easily tweak it based on your favorite sandwich combo. If you already have a go-to sub order, consider this your sign to chop it all up and turn it into a dip that’s every bit as satisfying.

When prepping in advance, however, skip any ingredients that could turn soggy — think lettuce, tomato, or cucumber — and mix them in right before serving. Below is my favorite version for capturing that perfect Italian hoagie flavor, but feel free to adjust and make it your own.

Dip Sauce (Required)

  • 1 cup mayo

  • 1 tablespoon Italian dressing seasoning mix (not plain Italian seasoning)

Dip Sauce (Optional but Highly Recommended Add-Ins)

  • 3 tablespoons Wickles Spicy Red Sandwich Spread (or any chopped pepper relish) + extra for serving

  • 1 tablespoon grainy Dijon mustard

  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon dried oregano

Dip Ingredients

  • 1½ lbs deli meat (I used salami, pepperoni, and honey roasted turkey)

  • ½ lb sliced cheese (Boar’s Head American works perfectly)

  • ½–1 cup favorite sandwich toppings (like chopped pepperoncinis, red onion, pickles, olives, or bell peppers)

Dippers

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced

  • 1 bag kettle chips (jalapeño kettle chips add the perfect crunch and kick)

The Method

1. Mix the Sauce: Start by combining all the required sauce ingredients — and any optional add-ins — in a large bowl. Stir until smooth and creamy.

2. Chop the Fillings: Next, dice your deli meats, cheese, and toppings into small, even pieces so each scoop gets a balanced bite.

3. Combine Everything: Then, toss all the chopped ingredients into the sauce until everything is evenly coated. If using lettuce or tomatoes, fold them in right before serving to keep things fresh and crisp.

4. Serve: Finally, chill the mixture for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors mingle. When ready, serve with sliced French bread, kettle chips, or even mini sub rolls for the full sandwich experience.

Serving Suggestions

Keep it casual by serving in a big bowl with chips and bread. For a fun twist, buy mini sandwich rolls (Jimmy John’s bread chunks work great), slice partway down, and stuff them with the dip. Then, grab some flavored kettle potato chips (jalapeño chips are the best!)

To kick things up a notch, offer extra Wickles or hot pepper relish on the side — perfect for those who love a little heat.

Storage and Prep

This dip actually gets better as it sits — make it a few hours ahead to let the flavors marry. It’ll keep for up to 2 days in the fridge, making it great for leftovers or meal prep. If it starts to look a little dry, just stir in a spoonful of mayo before serving again.

Notes

The best part about this recipe is you can really tailor it to your liking based on your favorite sandwich. Sharing the exact things we used but feel free to make it your own or make based on what is available.
  1. I find Wickles at Walmart but you can also substitute with any chopped pickle pepper mix.
  2. For deli meat, we did 1 pkg. Columbus dry aged salami, 1 pkg. Boars Head pepperoni, and 1 pkg. Kretchmar honey roasted turkey.
  3. For cheese, we did 1 pkg. Boars Head American cheese.
  4. For sandwich toppings, we did 1/2 cup chopped pepperoncinis/banana peppers, 1/4 cup chopped red onion (soaked in water before adding). I also like to add in pickles, olives, bell peppers, and tomatoes but add what ever you put on your favorite subs.
