I love watching all the dirty soda videos that seem to be everywhere right now. They’re fun, customizable, and honestly, they just look delicious. But as someone who has to be mindful of blood sugar, I knew I wanted to create a version that worked better for me.
I’ve had gestational diabetes in the past, and I also didn’t pass my postpartum two-hour glucose test, so finding ways to enjoy some of these fun food and drink trends with less added sugar has become important to me. This Apple Crisp Dirty Soda is my take on the trend—a fizzy, creamy fall drink made with sugar-free ginger ale, apple crisp syrup, and apple butter cold foam.
I had also been dying to try the viral apple butter cold foam, and it did not disappoint! The apple butter does contain some naturally occurring sugar, but you only need a small amount to give the foam that delicious apple-cinnamon flavor.
A quick note: This recipe is simply a personal, no-sugar-added alternative and is not intended as medical or dietary advice. If you are managing blood sugar, diabetes, or another medical condition, always check with your doctor or dietitian about what works best for you.
The Equipment
The one piece of equipment I definitely recommend for this recipe is a milk frother. They’re relatively inexpensive, and if you make fancy coffees at home, use protein powders or pre-workout, or just like experimenting with drinks, you’ll find plenty of uses for one.
I linked the frother I use and love. Mine came with a little stand, and I use it all the time. It’s still going strong, so it has definitely earned its spot in my kitchen!
And cute cups? Completely optional.
But do I think drinks taste better in a cute cup? Absolutely.
I don’t make the rules.

The Ingredients
I know this recipe calls for a few specialty ingredients, but the Skinny Mixes Apple Crisp Syrup is one I genuinely love. Sugar-free products can sometimes bother my stomach, so I appreciate that I can use this one without that issue. The apple crisp flavor is perfect for this drink, although their Sugar Cookie flavor is another favorite of mine.
The other key ingredient is apple butter. It gives the cold foam that rich apple flavor and makes this drink feel like fall in a glass.
And if you’ve never had apple butter served alongside a fresh roll and a bowl of soup, you are seriously missing out. It’s one of those little combinations that sounds simple but is SO good.
How to Make an Apple Crisp Dirty Soda
1. Make the apple butter cold foam
Start by combining the heavy whipping cream and apple butter in a small cup. Use your frother to whip the mixture until it becomes thick and foamy, about 1–2 minutes.
You’re looking for a light, creamy foam that will sit nicely on top of your soda.
2. Build your dirty soda
Fill a large glass with ice. Add the apple crisp syrup and pour in the chilled sugar-free ginger ale.
If you want to turn this into a cocktail, add your bourbon or whiskey at this point.
Give everything a gentle stir.
3. Add the cold foam
Slowly spoon or pour the apple butter cold foam over the top of the soda. This is the fun part because you get that pretty creamy layer floating over the fizzy apple crisp drink.
4. Add the finishing touches
You can keep it simple or make it extra cute with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a cinnamon stick, or a thin apple slice.
And then enjoy!
