Tangy Barbecue flavored Grilled Chicken
If you’re meal prepping, this Tangy Barbecue Flavored Grilled Chicken is a must. It’s packed with subtle barbecue flavor that complements just about anything — from salads to sliders, pizzas to quesadillas. You can toss it with barbecue sauce for a true BBQ chicken, or keep it simple for an all-purpose protein you’ll use all week.
This is one of those staple marinades that makes leftovers actually taste better — slightly tangy, lightly smoky, and perfectly juicy.
Expanded Ingredient Breakdown
Like everyone in 2025, I am always trying to up my protein and obviously chicken is an easy way to do it. However, cooking every single night can be challenging and left over chicken can be even more challenging. I found that if I marinate the chicken, I am able to make a large batch and the left overs taste much better! As such, have a couple different go-to chicken marinades that I rotate through that are all flavorful but simple enough to pair with any recipe. Let’s look closer at what makes this chicken so flavorful yet versatile.
Chicken Base
-
3 pounds chicken breast — Sliced thin for quick, even grilling. You can also use thighs for juicier results.
-
Salt & Pepper — Don’t underestimate these; they’re the base seasoning that ties it all together.
Tangy Marinade
-
½ cup apple cider vinegar — The tangy star of the show. Tenderizes and infuses a light bite.
-
2 teaspoons ground mustard — Adds brightness and sharp depth.
-
1 teaspoon onion powder — Subtle sweetness that rounds out acidity.
-
1 teaspoon paprika — A touch of smoke and color.
-
½ teaspoon celery seed — A small but mighty flavor boost reminiscent of barbecue rubs.
-
4–12 cloves garlic (fresh or frozen) — “Measure with your heart.” Adds punch and savory aroma.
-
2–3 tablespoons honey — Balances tang and adds caramelization when grilled.
-
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce — Umami-rich base note that deepens the flavor.
Tip: This marinade works beautifully on pork or tofu, too.
The Method
This recipe is pretty simple and you just want to take chicken of your choice (I opt. for sliced chicken breast) and mix in a zip lock bag with all the spices or seasonings. You will want to let marinate for a few hours or overnight. However, I do not recommend marinating more than 24 hours as the chicken can become too firm.
Once its marinated, I simply through on the grill and cook on both sides. I do like my chicken extra cooked but you can always cook yours for less time or use a meat thermometer to cook.
Pairings
This chicken can be used for any recipe calling for pre-cooked chicken and is delicious with:
-
Barbecue ranch chicken quesadillas (pictured in this post)
-
Grilled veggie skewers or roasted sweet potatoes
-
Cold pasta salad with ranch or honey-mustard dressing
-
Soft slider buns with extra barbecue sauce

Tangy Barbecue flavored Grilled Chicken
Equipment
- Grill
Ingredients
- 3 pounds chicken breast sliced into thin strips
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 teaspoons ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon onion power
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon celery seed
- 4-12 cloves garlic fresh or frozen but not jarred (measure with your heart)
- 2-3 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire
- Salt and Pepper To taste (I used 1 teaspoon each)
Instructions
- Marinate the Chicken: In a large container or zip-top bag, combine all ingredients and mix well to coat. Refrigerate and marinate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight. Avoid marinating longer than 24 hours — the vinegar can make the chicken too firm
- Grill: Preheat grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F). Grill chicken 4–7 minutes per side, depending on thickness.(We love it well-done with a little char — “perfectly charred,” as we call it — but you can cook yours to 165°F internal for juicier results.)
- Serve or Store: Let rest 5 minutes before slicing or serving. Use immediately, or store for meal prep in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
